Skin conditions are the fourth leading cause of non-fatal disease burden worldwide. With only one specialist dermatologist in Fiji and three in Papua New Guinea, many Pacific people don’t have access to specialist skin doctors – increasing these numbers will significantly improve health and quality of life, especially among children who have more skin disease than other age groups.
In 2019 , the first four students from Fiji, Kiribati and Samoa completed the postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology at the Pacific Dermatology Training Centre, at PJ Twomey Hospital in Suva, Fiji. To date, 11 Post Graduate Diploma of Dermatology students from Fiji, , Kiribati and Samoa have graduated and there are seven Master of Medicine in Dermatology students from Fiji, Solomon Islands and Kiribati with three graduating in December 2024, With your help, we will be able to offer scholarships for a four year Masters of Medicine (Dermatology) to more doctors and continue offering the opportunity of Diplomas.
Our key goal is to support more students from across the Pacific to complete the Diploma, and have those students complete the Masters.
We are also seeking philanthropic support for our longer term vision for building of a larger, well-equipped Pacific Dermatology Training Centre and patient facilities at Tamavua Twomey Hospital, Suva to enable expansion of the education program and better quality medical care for patients with skin disease, as well as facilities for improved pathology services, specimen evaluation, and laboratory services.
With further support, we will be able to develop a Master of Medicine in Pathology including a dermatopathology education program, incorporating scholarships for Pacific doctors. Ultimately, we also hope to develop laboratory services for dermatology, in particular, specialty fungal dermatology for identification and culture.
