Skin conditions are the fourth leading cause of non-fatal disease burden worldwide. With only one specialist dermatologist in Fiji and three in Papua New Guinea, many Pacific people don’t have access to specialist skin doctors – increasing these numbers will significantly improve health and quality of life, especially among children who have more skin disease than other age groups.

In 2019 , the first four students from Fiji, Kiribati and Samoa completed the postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology at the Pacific Dermatology Training Centre, at PJ Twomey Hospital in Suva, Fiji. Although the global pandemic disrupted some of our plans, we have been able to continue teaching via online video in 2020 and 2021. Three students are undertaking the Diploma in 2021 (from Fiji and Solomon Islands) and one student completed the Diploma in 2020 (from Papua New Guinea). With your help, we will be able to offer scholarships for a four year Masters of Medicine (Dermatology) from 2022 and continue offering the opportunity of Diplomas.

Our goal is to support students from across the Pacific to complete the Diploma, and have at least seven of those students complete the Masters. Future goals include offering specialised training for dermatology nurses and general practitioners.
